Is Corona the only culprit for toll of deaths in 2020?

Corona indeed has been the highest scorer for the number of lives claimed in the year 2020. Wherein coronavirus has grabbed all the attention in the medical fraternity across the world, Have you ever imagined, what are the other life-threatening diseases in the country, that has outperformed any other country(measured by population) in controlling the spread of coronavirus?

When Covid-19 has caused an alarming situation in the world, and now that all of us are even more aware of our health, fitness, and lifestyles, Let’s look at the other big killers in our country :

Heart Diseases 

Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) are the number 1 cause of death globally, taking an estimated 17.9 million lives each year. India has been one of the highest burdens of cardiovascular disease (CVD) worldwide. 

As per the world heart federation, non-communicable diseases (NCDs), including CVDs, are estimated to account for a whopping 60% of total adult deaths in India.

- CVDs account for over a quarter (26%) of these total deaths

- Some of the CVD related risks factors in adults in India are outlined below:

- 15% of the population smoke tobacco

- 4.3 liters of pure alcohol consumed per person

- Just over a fifth (21.1%) have hypertension which can increase the risk of heart

- The attack, heart failure, kidney disease, or stroke

- Run/walk for about 30-40 minutes every day

- Take out time to do some basic yoga

- Laugh as much as you can

- Quit smoking and avoid passive smoking

Diabetes Mellitus 

India has an estimated 77 million people with diabetes, which makes it the second most affected country in the world, after China. One in six peoples (17%) in the world with diabetes is from India. The number is projected to grow by 2045 to become 134 million per the International Diabetes Federation.

In 2020, according to the International Diabetes Federation (IDF), 463 million people have diabetes in the world out of which, 77 million belong to India. The prevalence of diabetes in the population is 8.9%, according to the IDF. As per the estimates, India has the second-highest number of children with type 1 diabetes after the United States, which also contributes to the largest proportion of incident cases of type 1 diabetes in children in the SEA region.

Per the World Health Organization, 2% of all deaths in India are due to diabetes.

- Keep your obesity level in check

- Limit your alcohol consumption

Road Injury/Accidents

While India continued to control the incidents of road injuries and accidents during this year of lockdown and home-based way of living, There were 20,300 fewer deaths in crashes or accidents on Indian roads while the Covid-19 lockdown was at its peak. However, the cases/accidents that happened are one of the causes of the deaths in the year 2020. 

In 2020, during the first six months in the year, 56,288 people died, increasing substantially in the later 6 months(Stats currently unavailable).
